"Leviathan"

There are many stories of monsters that lurk in the deep sea, but this one is the most feared one yet.

In the depths of the briny deep, awoke a creature. Dwelling in a forgotten keep. Hidden in an even deeper part of the Mariana Trench, which is said to be the deepest part of the ocean. Shackled around the neck, with a large chain attached to the collar.

 The “Leviathan”...

In the legends of old, the Gods created the Leviathan. To inflict fear of the Gods back into the human race he was created to be the Scourge of the Sea, devouring and consuming all in its wake when commanded. From the force of the undertow followed the swift end given to you by the Leviathan. The Gods needed an upper hand when it came to the ocean, for it was the most used part of the world. Be it used for fishing, travel or plunder, the sea was the lifeline of this planet. And now with the Leviathan everything could be kept in a state of balance.

The Leviathan had a large ferocious looking mouth with razor sharp teeth. With biting force capable of chomping through even the strongest of minerals. There was no other predator in the sea, when it came to fearing the open waters. What is most unique about the Leviathan was the fact it had no eyes. For it was created already knowing every inch of the sea. The Leviathan and the water were one. When given the command by the Gods the Leviathan would hunt and condemn its prey, sometimes playing with its food before consumption. It would circle a vessel gradually bumping into the bottom to inflict fear. Then in the blink of an eye, it would strike leaving nothing but shattered planks of wood and torn cloth still tied to the masts of broken ships. The Leviathan gradually made its way to being the most fearful thing in the sea.

It got to the point where the Leviathan would hunt on its own, with out instruction. This upset the Gods because the Leviathan was disrupting the balance of the sea. Everyday humans would pray to the Gods for a safe passage. And some of those who prayed, never even made it to their destinations. Outraged by the Leviathan’s recent freewill to devour, the Gods began to realize they couldn’t control the beast any longer. They tried and tried to reinforce its thoughts, but it was no use. This wasn’t all a bad thing however, now the Gods had a chance to receive the trust in humans they once sought by creating the beast.

The Gods couldn’t bring themselves to destroy the monster they created. So their only choice was to imprison the Leviathan so that he could no longer continue being the monster of the sea the humans feared.

The day was dreary. It looked like a storm was brewing off in the distant clouds and that alone gave signal and warning that trouble wasn’t far from arrival. The Leviathan ascended to the surface of the ocean attempting to attack what would have appeared to be a lonely merchant vessel with no defenses. This being part of the Gods plans to capture and detain the creature, the Leviathan arose from the waters to initiate in the destruction of the vessel when suddenly lightning struck from the darkness of the clouds. Hitting the surface of the water sending the Leviathan into a state paralysis. With only seconds until recovering from stagger, a large chain connected to a shackle launched out of from smoke that remained above the water caused by the intense heat of the lightning and clasps around the Leviathans neck. This chain was not made from mere earthly materials. The Gods created this chain for the sole purpose of capturing the Leviathan; only the Gods could break it. As the shackle slammed shut around the neck of the the Leviathan with brute force, the Leviathan was vigorously pulled beneath the sea. Causing water to splash and shoot into the skies. Leaving nothing but a calming surface of the sea.

The Leviathan was pulled into the deepest part of the ocean to become imprisoned, and someday forgotten. There he lay chained and asleep for hundreds of decades. Until one day, a disagreement broke out between the Gods. Claiming the humans took too much for granted, and no longer did they hold faith in the Gods. Some sought to punish the humans by inflicting the fear of the Gods back into their lives yet again by releasing the Leviathan. Others claimed that would only bring destruction, chaos, and imbalance to the world and its sea. So within seconds an argument stirred up between the Gods and in an act of anger a god named Pson took it upon himself to make the decision of setting the beast free. Deep within the trench where the Leviathan lay dormant and undisturbed, Pson shattered the chain with his axe, regrettably setting loose the terror of the deep. The Leviathan awoke, and immediately lunged toward Pson, biting into him, tearing him apart. Knowing that the Gods would soon discover what Pson had done, the Leviathan had to devour and feed discretely. The God who released him is now dead; therefor the Gods have no ties to the leviathan and can no longer sense his presence. So next time you go out into open water and fear for what creatures may lurk on the bottom of the ocean floor, just know...

The Leviathan is free to scourge the vast sea once more.
